black and white boudoir photo

Photography: boudoir background - This is a black and white image taken of Hazel in the studio in a quick session that we squeezed in between her other photoshoots. Hazel is a fashion model whose portfolio consisted mainly of strongly styled shots, often with wacky make-up. She wanted some softer, more feminine shots and I was delighted to be able to help.

Being short on set-up time I knew that I wouldn't have time to build an elaborate set so I quickly arranged a bed, a mirror and a two studio lights and shot using a long-ish lens so that you cannot see any of the clutter which was all around her!

I must admit that I made a classic mistake of not heating the studio enough though, so dressed only in lingerie she was freezing! Despite that we got quite a few successful photographs in which she looks beautiful and very feminine.

Technical Information

Camera: Canon EOS 7D DSLR

Lens: EF70-200f4L at 75mm

Exposure: f10, 1/250, ISO100

Lighting

This photograph was lit with two multiblitz studio strobes; a softbox in front to provide flatteringly flat light on her face and a stronger direct light behind her to add the highlights across her cheek bones, shoulder and breasts. This is a simple technique that relies on balancing the power of the two lights so that you have a full range of exposure without over-blowing the highlights.

Post Processing

The original image was OK, so there have only been a few simple post-processing steps:

  • Conversion to black and white (by simple desaturation in Aperture 3)
  • Exposure increase by 0.51 to make the image more high-key.
  • Contrast increase by 0.15 in Aperture 3.
  • Skin was retouched in a few places - particularly in areas where the backlight highlights any imperfections
  • Aperture3 Skin Smoothing filter applied everywhere (Radius 10.0, Detail 0.75, Intensity 0.5)

In all, the post processing probably only took a few minutes.
