Photo Ideas: Using Mirrors

In this part of our photo ideas series, I will look at using mirrors to add an extra dimension to your boudoir photographs.

There are a couple of good reasons to consider including a mirror in your shots:

• Firstly, it gives you many more composition options. Symmetry is the most obvious, but also you can use the mirror to change angles, and show more of you in the frame (which is often better than having blank space)
• Similarly, if you have limited space in which to shoot in, you can disguise this fact by filling the frame with the mirror
• Showing off your best bits! You can be really crafty and use a mirror to show off more of your best bits in a single photo - how else are you going to get your boobs and bum in the same shot??? Conversely if there are bits of you that you don't want to show then a mirror will often give you more posing options to achieve your goal. For example if you like your eyes and your bum, but not your bum then lie on your front with the mirror behind you - the camera focuses on your eyes and the mirror shows off your derriere.
• Modesty - anything in the mirror will be further from the camera and therefore more blurred (assuming you don’t focus on the bit in the mirror!). You can increas this by putting more distance between you and the mirror, and by increasing the aperture on the camera.
